Word on the Web

A special week by Alan Rainford, Manager of In2venture, looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

Matthew 14 v 28-31

Peter said, "Lord, if it is really you, then command me to come to you on the water."
Jesus said, "Come."
And Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when Peter saw the wind and the waves, he became afraid and began to sink. He shouted, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught Peter. Jesus said, "Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?"

The journey together continues looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

After a hands and knees crawl we enter into the lower cave, we come to a pool of water that we have to traverse around without hopefully falling in. You have to lower yourself down and put your right foot just above the water and then put you left foot where your right foot is and step across to the next rocks at the same time as whistling (ok that's an option). How deep is the water if I fall in? Do I really want to know? Will I be told anyway? Sometimes people fall in because their confidence goes at the crucial time they believe they will fail and they do. The important thing is they gave it a go.

The important thing is Peter got out of the boat and walked on water, the others didn't. We often talk of Peter sinking but he walked on the water first and couldn't sink if had not tried. I imagine Jesus smiling saying why did you doubt challenging Peter to go further in his faith and trust but pleased that he had tried. How much do we want to stay comfortable in our faith, what challenge is Jesus asking of us?

Jesus help me to be more aware of the challenges you give me to grow in my faith and the bottle to take on those challenges rather than look at my failings or other people's failings. Amen.
