Word on the Web

A special week by Alan Rainford, Manager of In2venture, looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

Matthew 26 v 69-75

At that time, as Peter was sitting in the courtyard, a servant girl came to him and said, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee."
But Peter said to all the people there that he was never with Jesus. He said, "I don't know what you are talking about."
When he left the courtyard and was at the gate, another girl saw him. She said to the people there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."

Again, Peter said he was never with him, saying, "I swear I don't know this man Jesus!"
A short time later, some people standing there went to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of those who followed Jesus. The way you talk shows it."

Then Peter began to place a curse on himself and swear, "I don't know the man." At once, a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: "Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't know me." Then Peter went outside and cried painfully.

The journey together continues looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.

We now come to the most famous part of the cave, the "cheese press", again you have the choice to do this or not. It's a tight passage once your head is on one side you cannot turn it the other way, some bigger people have to control their breathing by letting the air out of the lungs to be able to move forward. The route is well worn with the thousands of people who have been through it so the way ahead can be seen. Some people get through really easy, some get stuck or think they will be and so retreat back, some do not have a go.

The Christian journey must include us taking risks, stretching our comfort zones, or we will not grow as we learn through success or failure. Peter got it wrong he "failed", but wait a minute, where are the other disciples? He was the only one to put himself in the position to get it wrong. Are we willing to put ourselves in risk positions for Jesus? We might well get it wrong but we at least tried (and grew through pain) and you know we often also get it right (and grow).

Jesus you are the great risk taker help us to be willing to take risks in following you. Amen.
