2 Corinthians 1:15-22
I was so sure of all this that I made plans to visit you first so you could be blessed twice. I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and again on my way back. I wanted to get help from you for my trip to Judea. Do you think that I made these plans without really meaning it? Or maybe you think I make plans as the world does, so that I say yes, yes and at the same time no, no.
But since you can believe God, you can believe that what we tell you is never both yes and no. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, that Silas and Timothy and I preached to you, was not yes and no. In Christ it has always been yes. The yes to all of God's promises is in Christ, and through Christ we say yes to the glory of God. Remember, God is the One who makes you and us strong in Christ. God made us his chosen people. He put his mark on us to show that we are his, and he put his Spirit in our hearts to be a guarantee for all he has promised.
Paul had genuinely wanted to visit his friends in Corinth and planned a journey that would allow him to do so twice. However, because of things that had happened he felt it would be better to change that plan, not for his benefit but for theirs.
Things do sometimes happen that mean we have to do things differently from the way we had originally intended. This may be due to what we think best at the time, changing circumstances or a combination of both. I recently went to an exhibition in one city planning to return home for a prayer meeting later that evening, but an accident blocked the road and I wasn't able to get back in time. It didn't mean I'd never intended to go to the meeting, but I had to change my plans.
We can always be sure that God's love for us, shown in Jesus, doesn't change. He is always on our side, always with us, whatever may be happening. We may feel let down when someone doesn't turn up for something as planned, but that doesn't mean that God is unreliable. Though our plans may change God's plan for us is unchanging, to unite us to him and each other through faith in Jesus.
Lord God, thank you for your unchanging love for me. Thank you that I can always depend on you. Thank you for all you have done for me already and for all you are going to do. Amen.
