Word on the Web

Proverbs 1: 10-19

My child, if sinners try to lead you into sin, do not follow them.

They will say, "Come with us. Let's ambush and kill someone; let's attack some innocent people just for fun.
Let's swallow them alive, as death does; let's swallow them whole, as the grave does.
We will take all kinds of valuable things and fill our houses with stolen goods.

Come join us, and we will share with you stolen goods."
My child, do not go along with them; do not do what they do.
They are eager to do evil and are quick to kill.
It is useless to spread out a net right where the birds can see it.
But sinners will fall into their own traps; they will only catch themselves!

All greedy people end up this way; greed kills selfish people.

The news in the last year has been full of stories like this. Feral youth, the culture of "Respect" (which means the exact opposite), people carrying knives and guns - and violent death.

Go to a sink estate - a place where this culture is in charge. Does it make people happy? Do they enjoy their ill-gotten gains? Not much. They bring as much misery to themselves as to all those around them.

You're not like that, are you? Just rather more subtle about it? Look around your house at the things you have that the producer has been paid an unfair wage for. Open your eyes to the dishonest criticism of public figures that you lap up in the media. What else is there that doesn't bear close scrutiny?

The government never tires of telling us what we shouldn't do: SMOKING KILLS, read the warnings on cigarette packets. This is God's health warning: GREED KILLS.

Understand. Think. What are you going to do about it?

Lord God, I am naturally greedy. Teach me the self-control and the selflessness to walk in your ways all the days of my life. Amen
