Word on the Web
1 Peter 1 v 22-25
Now that your obedience to the truth has purified your souls, you can have true love for your Christian brothers and sisters. So love each other deeply with all your heart. You have been born again, and this new life did not come from something that dies, but from something that cannot die. You were born again through God's living message that continues forever. The Scripture says,
"All people are like the grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.
The grass dies and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord will live forever."
And this is the word that was preached to you.
What is the most important thing you will do today? You may have a full diary or be putting your feet up. You may have meetings to go to, emails to write, games to play or DVD's to watch. What is the most important thing you will do today?
Life is fragile. Like grass and flowers that wilt and die, we too will die. The readers of Peter's letter must experience this, knowing friends and family members who had been martyred for their faith. Peter tells them, God's word is more alive than "life" because it will live forever. That is a fact. Today the Roman Empire is ancient history but still God's message lives on.
Something else is eternal, that is love. The most important thing we do today is how we treat other people. Peter tells his readers "Love each other deeply". It is our 'love' not our achievements that matter. That will be the most significant thing eternally we will do today. For a Christian this doesn't just mean loving those we like or relate to well, but also those who annoy us, who upset us, or even those (like the Romans did to Peter's readers) who hurt us.
Think about the people you will meet today. Pray for opportunities to show them "love". Amen
