Psalm 72 v 12-14
He will help the poor when they cry out and will save the needy when no one else will help. He will be kind to the weak and poor, and he will save their lives. He will save them from cruel people who try to hurt them, because their lives are precious to him.
With my work in the fellowship of Alcoholic Anonymous I see lots of unhappy sights. I see addicted people staggering around under the influence of drink. They don't know that help is available if they want it. All members of AA have been through similar situations as the sufferer - and will help them if asked. The look on the face of a person suffering is horrid. I can now hold their hands and tell them that I know what they are feeling. I do know what they are feeling because I have felt it myself. The feelings of shame, isolation and guilt are so powerful the sufferer doesn't think they will go away. I can assure them that they will and with the help of God, one day at a time, they will recover.
Part of our Christian life is to help the poor and needy, to welcome the stranger, to stand up for the oppressed. The psalmist reminds us that their lives are precious (to the king), and similarly our lives are precious to God as are all lives.
Dear Lord, Help the afflicted and give them strength to carry on. You love us all and sometimes it's not always the addicted person's fault they are as they are. It could just be circumstances. Please let me be understanding and helpful to anyone I come across today who needs my help. Amen.
