A special week by Alan Rainford, Manager of In2venture, looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.
John 21 v 15-17
When they finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John do you love me more than these?"
He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."
Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John do you love me?"
He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."
A third time he said, "Simon son of John do you love me?"
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" Peter said, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you!"
He said to him, "Feed my sheep.
The journey together continues looking at Peter's experience of Jesus through a cave trip.
Our caving trip is nearly over - we head out down a hands and knees crawl which then becomes a flat out crawl. The water sounds very loud as a stream way we will soon join runs towards a large waterfall. This can be quite a worrying sound as the passage we are can flood so checking the weather forecast was important. We enter the stream and head out. We think we are "safe" but the rocks now have algae on them and there is a good chance of falling and hurting ourselves.
Peter had got it wrong, he had denied Jesus, there was no way back he thought. Jesus comes alongside Peter and says feed my sheep - he builds up a defeated Peter. Peter was going to get it wrong again and again. Why? Well maybe it's like coming to the end of the cave - he thought he was safe getting life sorted getting on top on things. This is the very time we are all likely to fall and get it wrong so keep alert always. The great thing is no matter how many times Peter, you and me fall flat on our faces Jesus will always be near at hand to pick us up.
Jesus when I get it right thanks, when I get it wrong sorry but thanks that you give me a hand up. Amen.
