Philippians 4 v 19-23

My God will use his wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need. Glory to our God and Father forever and ever! Amen.
Greet each of God's people in Christ. Those who are with me send greetings to you. All of God's people greet you, particularly those from the palace of Caesar.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

I hate saying goodbye. In a few days time I will be doing just that to four young people with whom I have shared the past fourteen weeks. We have trained together, discussed, worshipped, prayed, eaten, played, slept in a tepee, travelled, performed, canoed and much more. In less than a month they will be flying out to Australia, Canada, Jamaica and USA - quite some goodbye then.

All being well, we will spend two weeks together next July, sharing experiences and listening to God's plans for each of us into the future. So it is never really "goodbye" but only "see you again."

Liverpudlians have the habit of saying "I'll be back now" when they leave somewhere and intend to return before too long. It is actually at best grammatically inaccurate, and at worst a meaningless phrase - but I love the sentiment it contains. Life on earth is a fraction of a second in comparison to eternity - and the pain we feel through the absence of people we love is real, but temporary. I miss my dad, who died some years ago, and my son who is away at university, and colleagues who've moved on ... but before too long we'll have a massive, never-ending reunion.

So, if I happen to get run over by a bus, miss me if you like, but don't worry, "I'll be back now."

Jesus, thank you that you are the Lord of eternity. Help us to live with grief and the pain of missing people we love, while keeping one eye on the promise of heaven. Amen.
