John 19 v 28-30

After this, Jesus knew that everything had been done. So that the Scripture would come true, he said, "I am thirsty." There was a jar full of vinegar there, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' mouth. When Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and died.

Nearly four years ago Jennie and I moved to Cornwall to continue our Christian ministry. Since then we have redecorated both the inside and outside of our home. I can remember having completed the outside sitting in our garden on a sunny day and over a cup of coffee saying to my wife 'it is finished'! The sense of satisfaction that the job had been done was a reward in itself.

For many the most famous words that Jesus spoke are contained in this passage 'it is finished'. Jesus had refused to drink the wine that so often deadened the pain of such a cruel ending to life. But allowed his lips to be moistened so that he could speak these three important words.

From the opening chapter of the book of Genesis we not only see how God created a perfect world but also how human beings were determined to live by their own standards. As a result sin entered the word. The Old Testament is full of examples of people who offered countless sacrifices in an attempt to restore that right relationship.

Encapsulated within these words, 'it is finished', is the fulfilment of many Old Testament prophecies that spoke of a Saviour who would come so that people could know forgiveness once and for all.

In the hymn 'There is a green hill far away' William Horsley brings it all together in the words 'He died that we might be forgiven, He died to make us good, That we might go at last to heaven, Saved by His precious blood'.
What do I need to do to be forgiven, nothing! Jesus has paid the price. All we need to do is to accept that Christ died not just for the sin of the world but also of myself.

Lord for the first time today I have understood that you died for me. Please forgive me from my sin and become my Saviour and real friend as I continue to live my life. Amen.
