John 12 v 12-16
The next day a great crowd who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast heard that Jesus was coming there. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Jesus, shouting,
"Praise God!
God bless the One who comes in the name of the Lord!
God bless the King of Israel!"
Jesus found a colt and sat on it. This was as the Scripture says,
"Don't be afraid, people of Jerusalem!
Your king is coming, sitting on the colt of a donkey."
The followers of Jesus did not understand this at first. But after Jesus was raised to glory, they remembered that this had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
Here comes the Saviour! The people of Jerusalem, and all Judea, had been waiting for a king to lead them to freedom from their oppressors the Romans for years, and finally there was a Holy man, a teacher, who seemed to fit the bill. They were kind of right, but misunderstood the way Jesus was going to free them. Interesting too that the disciples hadn't a clue what was going on! He clearly hadn't been talking to them about being a king, otherwise they would have understood.
Its interesting how Jesus goes along with this, that he lets them treat him like this, that he deliberately finds a colt to ride on to fulfil the prophesy without even trying to explain to the crowd what was really going on. As he had done in the past, he knew he could speak and they would all listen... maybe throw in a couple of miracles for effect... but he lets them believe what they will believe.
This brings me back to yesterday and Meister Eckhart; "God, save me from God". Those who asked Jesus questions always got an answer that led them deeper. It seems that those that didn't ask, he didn't try and convince. Maybe there's a dynamic here between us and God. We can go as deep as we want into God, but he wont push us.
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." Jesus, Revelation 3:20.
Prayer
Imagine yourself in the crowds outside Jerusalem as Jesus the Holy man is coming into town. You really want to meet Jesus - you've heard so much about him, and your heart is pounding in your chest. As much as you've known anything you know that God is with this man. You get through to the front and you see him in the distance, sitting on a colt. Something about this procession seems a bit odd, you feel disconnected from the mass of people shouting out stuff about the promised king...
Then he's right in front of you. Jesus catches your eye. You can't turn away. You feel like he's talking straight to your heart.
