Part of a special themed week of Reflections based on The True Apprentice" (Matthew 10:38-42) written by Terry Eckersley
Matthew 10 v 41
This is a large work I've called you into, but don't be overwhelmed by it. It's best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won't lose out on a thing."
Jesus showed us how it's best to start small. Like when he offered a cup of cool water to a thirsty Samaritan woman. So why don't you do the same? Be a True Apprentice, open a car door, give someone a smile, be gracious and don't get angry quickly. If you're not giving money to charity, start with a small direct debit.
Don't think to yourself: "I'll pray about it" - do it! Saying you'll pray about it sounds spiritual but it can be a cop out. Sometimes that's just a way of never getting around to doing it. Make a choice and do it. Give your time, give yourself, give your money.
A few years ago I heard Joyce Myers say this: "Some of you think you're prophets to the nations and you can't even take authority over the dishes in your sink." When I heard that I thought: Ouch!
From that day on I made a decision. I decided to wash up after every meal. It's had an amazing effect on my discipline. Take authority over small things. Reply to your emails. Do the paper work. Hoover up. Get into the habit of being disciplined, and you'll be surprised what effect it will have on your relationship with Jesus. Jesus said, if you rule over the small, I'll make you ruler over much more. Jesus tells us to start small.
Lord, I don't want to be overwhelmed, so help me to take small steps as you guide me to realise the big picture. Help me to meet the needs of people around me. I want to give those gifts that make me a True Apprentice. Amen.
