John 16 v 12-15
"I have many more things to say to you, but they are too much for you now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words, but he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is to come. The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me, because he will take what I have to say and tell it to you. All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take what I have to say and tell it to you.
You can imagine that Jesus' followers were struggling to listen to what he was saying to them - his words were too difficult to hear. After all, Jesus had been with them for three years, and they probably felt that things were just getting started, that people were beginning to take notice of his teaching and his miraculous healings. They couldn't bear to think that Jesus was going to leave them. What would they do? They had heard all that they could take in at that point. Jesus knew that they would need the Spirit to reveal to them the big picture, after his impending death and miraculous resurrection.
I sometimes wish God would let me in on things a bit more, when a situation is confusing, bewildering - when I can't seem to "get" what's going on or what he's up to. But I have to trust that he knows best: he knows the situation and he knows me. He knows what I need to know, what I can cope with. He will reveal to me what I need when I need it, and that is a great comfort, even though it sometimes stretches my faith to the limit!
Dear Lord, Thank you that you know me inside out, and far better than I know myself. Help me to trust you when things are difficult and I don't understand what's happening. Help me to know the security of being held by you. Amen.
