John 13 v 12-20
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and sat down again. He asked, "Do you understand what I have just done for you? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, because that is what I am. If I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other's feet. I did this as an example so that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, a servant is not greater than his master. A messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you will be happy if you do them.
"I am not talking about all of you. I know those I have chosen. But this is to bring about what the Scripture said: 'The man who ate at my table has turned against me.' I am telling you this now before it happens so that when it happens, you will believe that I am he. I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send also accepts me. And whoever accepts me also accepts the One who sent me."
At Christmas some of the kids in our church decided they wanted to do something for kids locally who had difficult home backgrounds and who wouldn't be getting much at Christmas. They decided not to have their Christmas party and instead put the money towards gift hampers. They got lots of adults involved and with help were able to create some amazing hampers full of toys and other gifts. They looked brilliant! Many of those hampers went to families who couldn't afford to buy children's' gifts, some went to kids without parents. The reactions were ... emotional.
It does something to us when we reach out and serve others. When Jesus washed the disciples' feet He did so out of His immense, incredible love for His disciples. But He was also modelling something - showing them what to do. Showing them that out of the love that God has poured in they need to serve others. I heard someone say once that to know how much of a servant we are check out our reactions when we are treated like one!
Who has God put in your world you need to go and serve?
Lord, help me to serve others today. Show me who I need to serve and how I need to serve. Thank you for being my ultimate role model - showing me true servant hood.
