Word on the Web

1 Peter 5 v 12-14

I wrote this short letter with the help of Silas, who I know is a faithful brother in Christ. I wrote to encourage you and to tell you that this is the true grace of God. Stand strong in that grace.
The church in Babylon, who was chosen like you, sends you greetings. Mark, my son in Christ, also greets you. Give each other a kiss of Christian love when you meet.
Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

If you have a Bible at home, you might like to read through the last two chapters of 1 Peter again. (If you haven't, don't worry, but perhaps you might make contact with a local church and ask about how you can get a Bible, preferably one with a modern translation. For now you can see the text at biblegateway.com)

Peter has been writing to some Christians who were scattered in different regions and countries to encourage them to hold fast to their faith. He wanted to remind them of the importance of staying true to God, even when the world was collapsing around their ears.

That is much easier when you have Christian friends. Peter's faithful friend was Silas who pops up several times in the story of the early Church. He had worked extensively with Paul, and now seems to be helping Peter. (Scholars believe that this was after Paul's death.) True friends like that, who show great loyalty and "stickability" are a treasure. They help us to keep a proper sense of perspective on things, and encourage us when times are hardest. If you have friends like that, hang on to them.

If not, think of where you might find some.

Majestic God, I praise you that You know all things and that You know when I most need help. Please lead me to good Christian friends who will help me to remain faithful to You. Amen.
