John 8:48-53

The Jews answered, "We say you are a Samaritan and have a demon in you. Are we not right?"
Jesus answered, "I have no demon in me. I give honour to my Father, but you dishonour me. I am not trying to get honour for myself. There is One who wants this honour for me, and he is the judge. I tell you the truth, whoever obeys my teaching will never die."

The Jews said to Jesus, "Now we know that you have a demon in you! Even Abraham and the prophets died. But you say, 'Whoever obeys my teaching will never die.' Do you think you are greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died, too. Who do you think you are?"

Jesus continues the discussion with the Jewish religious leaders (John 8). Jesus has been trying to reveal to them that his credentials are evidence that he is the 'Truth' and the 'Life Giver'. Their response now is to try insult and accusation. They imply that Jesus is from Samaria. The Samaritans were a people group despised by the Jews, and a place where no prophet of God could possibly come from.

They then accuse Jesus of having a demon in him (in reality the complete opposite as Jesus was 'full of the Holy Spirit'). They were saying, "Who do you think you are?" "We've got God sorted, we're right, so you can't possibly be who you claim to be".

Living our daily lives as followers of Jesus can also bring us to encounter ridicule, accusation, and rejection even hostility. However Jesus knew who he was, secure in his identity as the Son. Jesus also knew his purpose, he saw the bigger picture. We too can be secure as 'sons and daughters of God' and by looking at life with an eternal perspective can overcome any difficulty that comes our way.

Jesus thank you that no temptation can come through which I can't endure, as your love affirms me, and your spirit empowers me. Come and fill me Lord that I might love even those who are making life difficult for me right now. Amen.
