John 13 v 31-35
When Judas was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man receives his glory, and God receives glory through him. If God receives glory through him, then God will give glory to the Son through himself. And God will give him glory quickly."
Jesus said, "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and what I told the Jews, I tell you now: Where I am going you cannot come.
"I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other."
Tony Campollo tells a story about a school teacher. There was one boy she taught called Teddy who she found very hard to like. He had a difficult home life and his mum died. He wasn't very responsive at school and never seemed interested. At Christmas the kids brought presents for their teacher. Teddy's gift wasn't even wrapped - in a brown paper bag. The other kids laughed as the teacher opened half a bottle of cheap perfume and bracelet with missing beads. The teacher put on the bracelet and sprayed on the perfume. At home time Teddy lingered behind. He told his teacher the bracelet looked good on her and the perfume smelt nice. They reminded him of his mum because they were hers. When Teddy left the room the teacher wept as she realised how harsh she had been to this poor lad.
From that day on she determined that she would start to love Teddy. She spent extra time with him and helped him through his schoolwork. Teddy did well at school and went on to university. Years later he became a doctor. He wrote to her inviting her to his wedding. The letter requested she sit next to him were his mother would of sat ... because "she was the only family he ever had". What a difference real love makes. Jesus is telling us to show real love to others, not just talking about it, this is how others will know we are Christians.
Who is hard to love in your world? We can only really truly love out of the love that God pours in to us.
Lord Jesus you love me so much. Help me to demonstrate your love today. May people notice you by the way I love others. Show me who to love in my world. Give me eyes to see what you see and a heart to love the way you do.
