John 8:54-59
Jesus answered, "If I give honour to myself, that honour is worth nothing. The One who gives me honour is my Father, and you say he is your God. You don't really know him, but I know him. If I said I did not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey what he says. Your father Abraham was very happy that he would see my day. He saw that day and was glad."
The Jews said to him, "You have never seen Abraham! You are not even fifty years old."
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!" When Jesus said this, the people picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus hid himself, and then he left the Temple.
Recently I had to follow directions to a village and the directions said to follow the signs. But the signpost at a crucial junction was hidden in a hedge... Have you ever been lost somewhere? How did it feel? Even if you've got time to look at a map, and it's not dark and cold, and you're not alone, it can still be frustrating and frightening.
But Jesus clearly states that he is the signpost to God, "I know him". Jesus is a clear signpost and is not hidden in a hedge. Jesus was God on earth.
And have you ever tried to give directions to someone else? Or have you ever tried to give directions to God to someone else? You either have to have clear knowledge of the route yourself, or you have to be willing to walk alongside them holding the map or helping them to set the "sat nav". See if you can talk with someone today about your journey with God, to either get or give directions.
Thank you Lord that on our journey with You we are not left without a signpost or map, but that Jesus came to earth to show us the way. Amen.
