Judges 17 v 7-13
There was a young man who was a Levite from the city of Bethlehem in Judah who was from the people of Judah. He left Bethlehem to look for another place to live, and on his way he came to Micah's house in the mountains of Ephraim. Micah asked him, "Where are you from?"
He answered, "I'm a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah. I'm looking for a place to live."
Micah said to him, "Live with me and be my father and my priest. I will give you four ounces of silver each year and clothes and food." So the Levite went in. He agreed to live with Micah and became like one of Micah's own sons. Micah made him a priest, and he lived in Micah's house. Then Micah said, "Now I know the LORD will be good to me, because I have a Levite as my priest."
What is interesting about today's passage of the book of Judges is that it illustrates how everyone has a 'calling' in life. That calling may be to be a world leader, sweep streets, or work in an office, and our challenge is to work out what that calling is. The young man who left Bethlehem was obviously searching for his 'calling' and was looking for direction and his place in life. These days there are so many voices speaking to us in our lives, and it is difficult to hear God's voice when our friends, either 'real' friends or 'virtual' friends we know from the Internet, are pulling us in so many directions. This is why it is important to pray to God to ask Him to lead us to our true 'calling'. We may not be called to be a world leader, but we can be sure that God will have something for us, where, unlike the confused young man portrayed here, we will play a part in the Body of Christ to worship the King of kings through our work and our faith.
Father, we thank you for everything we have in this world, and ask that you show us how we can properly serve you, through our work, and all the other things we do. Amen.
