Luke 2: 13-14
Then a very large group of angels from heaven joined the first angel, praising God and saying: "Give glory to God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace among the people who please God."
Angels large and small, eyes burning like fire, filling the night sky with their song. Some darting around like excited fireflies, others standing vast and majestic. Their voices massed on top of each other like a waterfall of gold. Contrast this with the scene in the stable, a scene of no earthly significance, simple and basic. But suddenly the curtain is drawn back and we are invited into the heavenly significance - a royal birth, THE royal birth, the Word made flesh - heaven erupting into earth.
I like to think this wasn't planned, but that the angels were having such a celebration in heaven that it spilled out into the earthly realm.
Jesus, later in life, spoke of parties in heaven - he talked of the angels in heaven rejoicing over one human who turns to God (Luke 15:7). These daily actions of humans seem so insignificant, but in heaven there is a party. Angels seem very excitable, on the verge of a party everyday. Let us pray for their perspective and hearts that rejoice in the heavenly significance of even mundane everyday acts of love and kindness.
Loving Father, we pray for the eyes of heaven. Help us see the eternal significance of small daily acts of repentance, love and forgiveness. Give us your values and heart. 'Come my joy, my love, my heart. Such a joy as none can part, such a love as none can move, such a heart as joys in love.' (George Herbert) Amen
