28 July 20082 Corinthians 11:1-6
I wish you would be patient with me even when I am a little foolish, but you are already doing that. I am jealous over you with a jealousy that comes from God. I promised to give you to Christ, as your only husband. I want to give you as his pure bride. But I am afraid that your minds will be led away from your true and pure following of Christ just as Eve was tricked by the snake with his evil ways. You are very patient with anyone who comes to you and preaches a different Jesus from the one we preached. You are very willing to accept a spirit or gospel that is different from the Spirit and Good News you received from us.
I do not think that those "great apostles" are any better than I am. I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have shown this to you clearly in every way.
When we pick up a newspaper or turn on the television news, what are we mainly confronted with, good or bad news? Amazingly, bad news sells!
Paul says to the Corinthian Christians that they were being enticed by the different news from false teachers who had entered in among them, and so he reminds them of the Good News that he had passed onto them.
The Church today continues to proclaim the Good News to a hurting world and yet if we are honest it seems that at times even the Church can present the Good News as more like bad news.
The Good News is liberating, exciting and life transforming. Jesus died and rose again, so that we might have life and have it to the full. The Good News that Jesus offers, is not just about life after death, but also life before death. The Good News is very diverse and its application will be different for each person.
For example, if I see a homeless person on the street and merely say to them Jesus loves them and then walk on by, is that really Good News for them? Good News for that person will include being fed, clothed, accommodated and helped to get work. By these actions, the words that Jesus loves them will then mean something to them.
Think of different ways that we can be Good News to those we meet today.
Lord, help me to be Good News to everyone that I meet today - by giving a smile, taking time to listen, giving a word of encouragement or offering to help in someway. Open my eyes and ears today, so that I can be Good News to the person before me. Amen.
