2 Samuel 7 v 18-24

Then King David went in and sat in front of the LORD. David said, "Lord GOD, who am I? What is my family? Why did you bring me to this point? But even this is not enough for you, Lord GOD. You have also made promises about my future family. This is not normal, Lord GOD.

"What more can I say to you, Lord GOD, since you know me, your servant, so well! You have done this great thing because you said you would and because you wanted to, and you have let me know about it. This is why you are great, Lord GOD!

There is no one like you. There is no God except you. We have heard all this ourselves! There is no nation like your people Israel. They are the only people on earth that God chose to be his own. You made your name well known. You did great and wonderful miracles for them. You went ahead of them and forced other nations and their gods out of the land. You freed your people from slavery in Egypt. You made the people of Israel your very own people forever, and, LORD, you are their God.

David never forgot his humble beginnings. You only have to look at one of the Psalms he wrote to see that he was always grateful for what God had done. Not only this but he was grateful that God was going to bless his families' future and that his dynasty would never end. No wonder he said, "this is not normal" but then again, God never is!

He was also bowled over by the great things God had done for a little tribe of people, called 'Israel'. A group of slaves were now the dominant force in the land. David knew they had got this far not through their own greatness but the greatness of their God.

This is how we should be too. Always humble and grateful for the fact that God chose us and made us his sons and daughters even though we didn't deserve it. It's an old fashioned way of putting it I know but we should never forget that we are sinners saved by God's grace. Not only do we look back but we can also praise God for the future plans he has for us because whatever they are, we know they won't be normal!

Lord, thank you for what you have done in my life and for the extraordinary plans you have for me.
