2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So we do not give up. Our physical body is becoming older and weaker, but our spirit inside us is made new every day. We have small troubles for a while now, but they are helping us gain an eternal glory that is much greater than the troubles. We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see. What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever.
"Our physical body is becoming older and weaker" - take it from one who knows! If you're still young and in your prime and feel strong, fit and invincible, believe me, it won't last!
Yet time is relative... seen in the perspective of eternity, the Christian's difficulties, whatever they may be, diminish in importance. By comparison, the eternal glory is far greater than all the suffering one may face in this life (Romans 8:18), though these may not feel like "small troubles" when you're experiencing them.
"What is seen"? : 'Treasures on earth' the world sets store by include big houses, large bank balances, good job, fast cars, and foreign holidays. Is this what you hanker after? "What we see will last only a short time".
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21)
"What is unseen"? - 'Treasures in heaven' (fruits of the Spirit in other guises) - friendship, compassion, playfulness, generosity, all things you have to give away or share, "will last forever". Where is your heart?
Dear Lord, Thank you that every morning we wake up with you is a new start. May we be so focussed on you and your presence in our lives that any sufferings and troubles in our lives are put into perspective, and become oases of learning and perseverance. May we grow wiser and richer every day, with treasures in heaven that we keep sharing and giving away. And may we never lose but always pass on the hope of spending eternity with you. Amen.
