Psalm 72 v 15-17

Long live the king! Let him receive gold from Sheba. Let people always pray for him and bless him all day long. Let the fields grow plenty of grain and the hills be covered with crops. Let the land be as fertile as Lebanon, and let the cities grow like the grass in a field. Let the king be famous forever; let him be remembered as long as the sun shines. Let the nations be blessed because of him, and may they all bless him.

This passage, to me, expresses hope and faith, anticipation and desire. In my mind I can hear bells ringing and happy voices chanting. The psalmist brings across the wonderment of a new king - the hope that all he brings will be happiness and goodwill. There is hope that the new king will change things and make all their lives happy and fruitful. Do you remember the harvest festivals at school? This is a celebration of all the hard work which goes into the crops and the fields of the land by farmers and land workers, as well as a thanksgiving to God for his gift of food to us. This food gives us energy and ambition.

Today, some young people seem unaware of where their food originates. We go into a supermarket purchase what we need, load our cars up and then go home and eat. Years ago people had to store food for they didn't know when they would be able to buy more. They relied on the weather and God's will for the crops to harvest. Harvest time is a celebration. Those who know God, like the nation, praise God and are blessed by him - may we all know his blessing.

Dear Lord, Please let me be grateful for the food I eat, the clothes I wear and the friends I have. Some people in other parts of the world don't have this and for my share I am grateful. Amen
