Word on the Web
1 Peter 1 v 13-16
So prepare your minds for service and have self-control. All your hope should be for the gift of grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ is shown to you. Now that you are obedient children of God do not live as you did in the past. You did not understand, so you did the evil things you wanted. But be holy in all you do, just as God, the One who called you, is holy. It is written in the Scriptures: "You must be holy, because I am holy."
Many people look at the way people are dressed and judge them. Sometimes we can be pressured to dress in a certain way, to have certain haircuts or not to wear certain items of clothing, in order to look more "Christian".
When I went to be selected for Church Army I had in-growing toenails. This meant the only footwear I could wear was an open-toed sandal. The trouble was the other people on the selection weekend with me thought I was wearing sandals to make myself look more holy!!
However, our footwear does not make us holy. But our behaviour does. Peter challenges us to behave in a way that people see the difference in us. We should be thinking of ways to serve others. We should be self controlled not self-indulgent. We should put our hope in God, not in other people, nor lottery numbers. We should be obedient to God's rules. These are the things that make us holy.
The key thought is that God is holy. So the things that define the character of God, like love, purity, fairness, should be aspects we should want people to see in us.
Lord thank you for giving us your Holy Spirit and the Bible. Help us understand your word and your plans better today. Amen
