John 21 v 1-3
Later, Jesus showed himself to his followers again-this time at Lake Galilee. This is how he showed himself: Some of the followers were together: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the two sons of Zebedee, and two other followers. Simon Peter said, "I am going out to fish."
The others said, "We will go with you." So they went out and got into the boat. They fished that night but caught nothing.
After three years of being with Jesus, and following him around everywhere, here we find some of the disciples resorting back to what they knew, and their own trade. They resorted back to this without even knowing that Jesus was there watching over them.
So many times we go through life and don't even acknowledge the fact that Jesus is there and knows all the situations we get involved in. Here are some of the disciples fishing, not knowing that Jesus is there. No doubt they would have felt they had wasted their time fishing as they had caught nothing. And perhaps we can feel that frustration as well, trying things, not seeing any results from our hard work?
But maybe the challenge here for us is not to try and do things in our own strength, and always look for Jesus. If we stay close to him, and stay close to the things he has called us to do, and be the people he has called us to be, then our work will not be in vein, like these fishermen here in this passage, but we will see great results from our work.
Jesus help me to stay close to you and all that you have called me to be and do. Help me not to do things in my strength, but in the warmth and security of your presence. Amen.
