Word on the Web

Judges 18 v 22-26
When they had gone a little way from Micah's house, the men who lived near Micah were called out and caught up with them. The men with Micah shouted at the Danites, who turned around and said to Micah, "What's the matter with you? Why have you been called out to fight?"
Micah answered, "You took my gods that I made and my priest. What do I have left? How can you ask me, 'What's the matter?' "
The Danites answered, "You should not argue with us. Some of our angry men might attack you, killing you and your family." Then the Danites went on their way. Micah knew they were too strong for him, so he turned and went back home.

This was a time when Micah's faith was tested to the limit. He had 'gods' and a priest and worshipped them faithfully - and yet when he saw them being taken away he had no option but to turn back and return home. Once again the Scripture is rich with meaning, and there is a lot we can learn from these few paragraphs. First of all, when we put too much faith in something that is not our Lord God in heaven - for example money, job security or a personal relationship - it will ultimately let us down. When that happens, we can share with Micah the experience of turning back and walking home - and when we have learned from our mistakes we can try again, this time putting our faith and trust in God. This 'conversion' of one way of life to another is the sort of experience we go through when we decide to become a Christian, and yet we can continue to go through the experience as we learn to let go of the things that come between us and God - because we idolise them. Life is one long learning curve, and as we learn we become closer to the God who loves us and created us in His image.

Lord I love you and want to get closer to you, so test me and take away the things that come between us. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
