Proverbs 2: 1-8
My child, listen to what I say and remember what I command you.
Listen carefully to wisdom; set your mind on understanding.
Cry out for wisdom, and beg for understanding.
Search for it like silver, and hunt for it like hidden treasure.
Then you will understand respect for the LORD, and you will find that you know God.
Only the LORD gives wisdom; he gives knowledge and understanding.
He stores up wisdom for those who are honest. Like a shield he protects the innocent.
He makes sure that justice is done, and he protects those who
What do you treasure? I mean, really treasure. What is it that you would give up all sorts of things to have? What is really really important to you?
Love? Being valued and accepted as you are? Being at peace with yourself? What else?
"Cry out for wisdom, and beg for understanding. Search for it like silver, and hunt for it like hidden treasure," it says in this passage. "Then ....." and it goes on to God's promises.
God, the Creator of the Universe, the One who knows everything, the source of all goodness, has opened up his vast treasure-store and invited you in. Will you accept?
What are his conditions? None. But his treasure has some magic properties. God's wisdom can only be seen through eyes that are honest. His protective armour only works when coated with innocence on one side and loyalty on the other.
"Then you will find that you know God." What an amazing promise! Not because you have met Him, but because you gradually learn how His mind ticks.
Have I ever met God or seen Him? Not yet, although some Christians do in this life. But I know Him because He has revealed His mind to me. I can't begin to grasp more than a tiny part of it, because my understanding and imagination are so limited. The more I seek His will and His wisdom, the more I find that I know Him.
Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine, to Him be glory and praise for ever and ever. Amen (Ephesians 3:20).
