1 Peter 2 v 11-12
Dear friends, you are like foreigners and strangers in this world. I beg you to avoid the evil things your bodies want to do that fight against your soul. People who do not believe are living all around you and might say that you are doing wrong. Live such good lives that they will see the good things you do and will give glory to God on the day when Christ comes again.
What is the difference between an average churchgoer, particularly in the Western World, and an average citizen? Do we as disciples stand out as being distinctly different in any way? On Sundays we are often to be found in church buildings, whilst others are occupied in different ways, such as washing the car, playing a sport, doing the garden or just having family time. Our Sunday "hobby" is different, but what about our lives and the way we live them out.
Peter urges us to place little value on the comfort and wealth sought by so many in our world. To live by a different set of values given us by Jesus - working for justice for all, doing good, being a blessing to all. Why? To give glory to God, and to be distinctly different from those around us in a way that is attractive and appealing. Often Christians are known for what we don't do, maybe it's time to be known for what we positively and actively do.
Try today a small random act of kindness for someone else, and see if it raises a smile or a question. Be distinctly different as you follow Jesus today.
Lord Jesus, it is so easy to become just like those around us, but you have called me to stand out from the crowd. Not so people look at me, but so they are pointed towards you. Help me to live up that challenge today and every day, Amen.
