Part of a special week of studies focusing on serving God and following his call.
Genesis 12:1
The Lord said to Abram, "Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land I will show you."
Some of our best family days out have been when we've packed some food and set off in the car with no particular destination. We might stumble across a country market, a game of village cricket, a computer fair, a model railway exhibition or even a theme park we've never visited before - the unknown and unexpected treasures that add to the sense of adventure and anticipation!
The first thing my SatNav asks me for in order to function effectively, is a destination. "She" can't cope with driving around without knowing where we are heading for. But that is exactly what God told Abram to do - leave your home, friends, family, all that is familiar - and head off to a place I'll tell you about later!
I left school with the rest of my life pretty well sorted - three years at university followed by a successful and well-paid career as a Chartered Accountant. Throw in a beautiful wife and a couple of kids, good holidays each year and a comfortable home, and I'd be quite content. But God called me out of that life-plan into something quite different - a life I could never have predicted or imagined!
Xplore is a Global Gap Year programme for people willing to follow God . . . wherever he takes them. What about you, today, will you step out into a new friendship, hobby, or whatever God may lead you into?
God, I usually like to be in control of my own life, destination, decisions. Help me to learn how to follow you, even without knowing where you'll take me. Amen.
