An Advent Special to mark the start of Advent

Word on the Web

Luke 2:8-12

That night in the fields near Bethlehem some shepherds were guarding their sheep. All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord's glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. But the angel said, "Don't be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. This very day in King David's hometown a Saviour was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay."

What would your response be if an angel appeared before you and the Lord's glory shone all around you? I'd be pretty sure it wouldn't be your average Thursday evening. I'd also guess that your life would never be the same after that.

The shepherds were afraid but the angel reassures them. They would have been wondering what was going on so the angel gets straight to the point. Telling them that a Saviour has been born and that it is great news, everyone will be happy. I think we need to take note of a few things here. Shepherds were not the most glamorous of people, yet the angel comes to them. God can speak to all of us no matter how important or unimportant we are in the eyes of the world. The angel also indicates that the Saviour is for all people, no-one who accepts him is excluded, no one is too lowly.

Lord I thank you for Jesus. I thank you that he is my Saviour. I thank you that in you i am someone significant. I thank you that you're not a lofty, distant, powerful being, but you are willing to get down along side us and call us your own. Amen
