Word on the Web

Judges 16 v 10-14

Then Delilah said to Samson, "You made a fool of me. You lied to me. Now tell me how someone can tie you up."
Samson said, "They would have to tie me with new ropes that have not been used before. Then I would become as weak as any other man."
So Delilah took new ropes and tied Samson. Some men were hiding in another room. She called out to him, "Samson, the Philistines are here!" But he broke the ropes as easily as if they were threads.
Then Delilah said to Samson, "Again you have made a fool of me. You lied to me. Tell me how someone can tie you up."
He said, "Using the loom, weave the seven braids of my hair into the cloth, and tighten it with a pin. Then I will be as weak as any other man."
While Samson slept, Delilah wove the seven braids of his hair into the cloth. Then she fastened it with a pin.
Again she said to him, "Samson, the Philistines are here!" Samson woke up and pulled out the pin and the loom with the cloth.

I think Bible readers are starting to think Samson's not all there upstairs. His lover has actually tied him down and invited people into his house to capture him and he's still chosen to stay with her. The character of Samson is a great encouragement to those of us prone to foolishness and susceptible to our desires. Through all his stupidity, God still chose to use Samson as Israel's judge. God uses the foolish to shame the wise and his strength is made perfect in our weakness.

The Bible is brutally honest about Samson's failures and yet he is listed later on in the book of Hebrews 'Hall of Faith'. While wisdom is something to be sought, we all make mistakes often in passion or fear, know that God can and will use you wherever your weaknesses lie.

While it is good to know your strengths, it is better to rely on God. The Holy Spirit in Samson's life was the thing that turned him from a strong man to an extraordinary hero. Always be open to the spirit working in your life and realise that God has an abundant life planned for you.

Lord, help us to realise both our strengths and weaknesses and to rely on you in both. Thank you that you offer us a greater life than we can provide for ourselves and help us to be faithful to that. Amen
