Word on the Web
Meditations for Life's Journey
From the Wise Traveller Series

Today's Word on the Web follows a different format to our normal pattern and uses material from the "Wise Traveller" series of meditations for life's journey on happiness. The material is copyright Scripture Union and used by permission.

If I were you I wouldn't be happy, a life changed for ever by a random accident. A promising career cut short. If I were you I would be angry, bitter, depressed. I've met people like that and understand their feelings, but I don't understand your happiness. You even seem able to joke about it in ways no one else would dare. I've also seen the effort you expend on being positive and am sure that at time it must be a real struggle, but your laughter is genuine and comes from somewhere deep within. If I were you I think I'd complain, ask for compensation and 'special' treatment. You refuse all this, insisting you're simply 'differently-abled'. I find that hard to comprehend, but I guess you are far too alive to be called 'dis-abled'. If I were you I'd have given up long ago, but you keep going and in spite of everything are indeed happy; happy with yourself and so are able to bring joy to others. I wish I knew your secret, even though I'm not like you. Neither am I happy.

Steve Hollinghurst

In this world nobody can escape from some suffering and the Cross; it is necessary to pass through the valley of the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4) for a longer or shorter period. But true Christians who hear their Cross 'die', yet they 'live', and in the midst of persecution are like the leaves of a tree which fall in winter, only to appear in renewed vigour in the spring, and prove they are really living (2 Corinthians 4:8-10; 6:4-10). In spite of sorrow and suffering their life is hid in God. Like the Gulf Stream, which protects the northern lands from the severe cold by its warm currents of water flowing across the ocean, so the hidden stream of the love of God and the current of the Holy Sprit protect and keep His people joyful and content.

Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889-1929)
