An Advent Special to mark the start of Advent

Word on the Web

Matthew 2:1-4

When Jesus was born in the village of Bethlehem in Judea, Herod was king. During this time some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and said, "Where is the child born to be king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." When King Herod heard about this, he was worried, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem. Herod brought together the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses and asked them, "Where will the Messiah be born?"

There are a few interesting things in this passage. Herod and the Magi were Gentiles yet they were in no doubt about the significance of Jesus' birth. Herod describes Jesus as the Messiah and the wise men call him the King of the Jews. It is interesting to see the different responses of Herod and the Wise Men. Herod, despite his acknowledgment of Jesus as a heavenly Messiah wants to kill him. The wise men want to worship him.

So many people today don't seem to understand the significance of Jesus. The Messiah. God become flesh. Our salvation. What will your response to Jesus be? How will you share the amazing story of Jesus with others?

Lord, I pray that you would help us to understand the significance of Jesus to us today. I pray that you would show us how to tell others about him. Give us the faith to share Jesus with our friends and family. Amen
