Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 7:12
In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.
Jesus doesn't say that we should do to others what they have done to us. (For example, if a boy racer carves you up at traffic lights, force your way angrily ahead of him.) Instead he says that we should treat others as we wish to be treated. (For example, resist slagging off difficult colleagues in the hope that they will copy your example.)
This is the day on which we remember Jesus preparing to do something different from either of those, and altogether better. He would bless those who cursed him. He would be kind to those who disowned him. He would love those who hated him. Alleluia!
Help me Father, to love as you love, to treat others as you would do, and not to treat others as they treat me. When this is hard, support me, when it gets me down, lift me up. Thank you. Amen
