Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 7:9-11
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? ... If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
Some fathers teach us to be independent. Some fathers disappear or are never known to us. Some fathers are the reason we know what it means to show true love. Some fathers are so hurtful that the scars never fade. Some fathers are heroically kind.
Surprisingly, this passage tells us that God is nothing like a father. He is infinitely better. Anything we know about human fathers pales into insignificance beside the generosity of the Lord. Let every human soul cry out in gratitude!
Father, thank you for all your good gifts to me. I do not deserve them but you give them because you love me. Help me to be as generous in all I do and show your love to others. Amen
