Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 6:22-23
The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
These verses suggest that there is a frightening line of connection: What you see you will desire. What you desire you will become devoted to. What you are devoted to will eventually control you.
As far as Jesus is concerned, single-mindedness is vital to ensure that a person is sure of his footing in a world that requires us to tread our way through shadowy compromises.
Help me, Lord Jesus, keep my eyes fixed on your and not be diverted to things that will dishonour you. Amen
