Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 6:19-20
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
It is evident what 'treasures on earth' are - they flash, and bleep, and gobble up electricity, and come with masses of packaging, and wear out, and gather dust all around us.
But what are 'treasures in heaven'? They are things on which no monetary value can be put, because they will be given without cost. The joy of the end of suffering; the relief of constant peace; the security of knowing that you are loved; the triumph of goodness. Earthly treats just give us a fleeting glimpse of what God has in store.
Father, thank you for your gifts to me. All that I have on earth I have out of your generousity and provision. Let me not lose sight of that and seek more for myself. Amen
