Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel
Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
There is nothing easy about mercy. It requires people to dig into their souls and fight their natural desire to get even or restore their wounded pride. When mercy is genuinely offered it cures and helps and heals.
However, the relief it brings is almost invariably felt by the one who gives as well as the one who receives. Those who have experienced this (and perhaps only them) know that what Jesus said about mercy is true.
Jesus, help me to be merciful in all I do. Amen

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Let's be honest! For most of us there is a difference between the life that people see us living and the life that is going on inside our heads. Hidden from the rest of the world are the secrets that we would blush to confess, the jokes that make us laugh, and the thoughts that we would never dare put into words.
No wonder we find it difficult to understand God, or even to focus on him - only those who are utterly sincere could bear the dazzling vision of the Lord that evaporates all hypocrisy and deceit. It is not the purely religious who are clear-sighted about God; it is those who are inwardly pure.
Father, help me to focus on you, help me be pure in my heart. Amen
