Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
War is unspeakably dreadful, and one of its hidden evils is that its legacy continues for years after the guns have stopped firing. To be a peacemaker requires decades of painstaking work. It could be a dispiriting thought if it were not for the fact that all the Bible's writers found the Lord ultimately to be a God of salvation and life, not of destruction and death.
But the fault lines that tip people into war lie not only between tribes and religions; they run through every human heart. The argument that has ended in an indignant impasse, the grudge people deal with by never mentioning it, the resentment that keeps people polite but distant - in all these situations God calls for peacemakers. If you can make a difference, Jesus says, 'Congratulations!'.
Lord of peace and love, help me to work for peace in all I do. Amen
