Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 5:11-12
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Those who decide to follow Jesus are heading down a route that may involve suffering and insult. In this country it will mean petty aggravation, but in some countries of the world it means life-threatening danger.
Does Jesus say to them, 'Grit your teeth and suffer this in silence'? No he doesn't! He says, 'In those desperate moments, rejoice!' Extraordinary! Could you do that?
Lord, where ever you call me, help me to go, and help me rejoice in you. Amen
