Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel
Written by Peter Graystone.
Matthew 5:13
[Jesus said,] 'You are the salt of the earth.'
The main use of salt in Jesus' day was as a preservative. It was used for flavouring and healing as well, and new born babies were rubbed with salt. But what Jesus had in mind was that his people were to preserve what is good in human nature, combating and preventing corruption.
Salt seeps unseen into food. And that is how it can be with the work of Christians. Jesus is not calling for revolutionaries, but instead he wants the good influence of his followers to percolate unnoticed through the structures of society and change them for good. Being his witnesses just by being there!
Jesus, as salt savours and preserves food, may I be salt to people around me, a witness for you. Amen.
