Matthew 5:14
[Jesus said,] 'You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.'
Night! No street lights or headlights, because they wouldn't be invented for twenty centuries! In Jesus' day, when the sunlight had gone, it was not a good time to be travelling! In that context a city on a hill, with lights shining from the windows of its houses, was a godsend, guiding a fearful traveller to safety.
Let the wisdom of Christian ethical standards blaze out nationally and globally, says Jesus, giving a sense of direction to a society that is increasingly losing its confidence in the certainties of right and wrong.
Heavenly Father, in all I do help me shine as your light in the world. Amen
