Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 5:43-45
You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.
Did Jesus know how hard it is to love your enemies? Surely yes! So why did he ask the impossible? Because he was setting us the highest challenge - to be like God.
God's ways with us have entirely been marked by grace. He has been utterly long-suffering, and more loving than anything in our imaginations. He has made us his children. Alleluia!
Jesus, it is not always easy to follow you and follow your commands. As I pray the words of the Lord's Prayer, help me to mean it when I say "as we forgive those who sin against us". Help me to forgive and love those who are against me. Amen9 March 2007
