Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 6:2
When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
We have all seen photographs of a company using the donation of a (literally) huge cheque to draw attention to themselves. And we have all read of businessmen giving large sums to political parties, secretly hoping to advance their own interests. Don't imagine that God is impressed by this, says Jesus.
This Lent gives you an opportunity to give money, quietly and without any ambition to gain something in return, so that the Good News of Jesus can reach those who have never heard it.
Father God, protect me from pride and vanity, and give me humility that I may work for you and not for self. Amen
