Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 6:11
Give us today our daily bread.
Greedy people have trouble praying. Hungry people can't stop themselves praying. Here at the heart of the Lord's Prayer we ask God to provide for our needs.
However, the way Jesus has taught us to pray does not allow us to be greedy, because it insists that we make ourselves dependent on God for the basic needs of that day, and only that day, every day. Our lives would be totally different if we didn't know where tomorrow's meal would come from. Would they be better or worse?
Lord Jesus, many people in the world do not know what it means to be hungry, and yet many are also starving and without food, shelter, love. You teach us to rely on you for our daily needs, and yet so often we rely on self, we store up for the future, and neglect others around us. Help me today to help provide for others needs where I can, and where I have needs please help others to be your agents to me. Give us all today our daily bread. Amen
