Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 6:26-27
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
Jesus points out that worrying is a luxury. People in genuine need know that they can't afford to waste their energy on worrying; they need to put all their strength into surviving.
But let's face facts - everyone who thinks hard or feels deeply will have occasions when they worry. Faith doesn't remove all cause for worry, but it does offer a way of dealing with it. We are under the care of a good God. The evidence we need of that is all around us in nature - for those who have eyes to see it!
Lord, as I look at the birds in the air, and creatures of the land, I am reminded that you provide for our needs. As I pray "give us today our daily bread", help me to thank you for your goodness, and not to worry needlessly about tomorrow. May those whose needs are not met because of injustice or greed, find what they need. May your will be done. Amen
