Praying, Giving and Receiving - a special series for Lent on Matthew's Gospel, written by Peter Graystone
Matthew 7:3-5
Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? ... You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Why are we so preoccupied with other people's faults, rather than our own? A good question! What does it make you think of? The way you drive, perhaps? Or the way you handle money? Or the language you use?
Here is Jesus' command: Examine your own failings and find forgiveness. Then when you look at others it will be in a context of gratitude, and that allows you to be both accurate and merciful.
For your prayer today, think about yourself, no one else. Consider what you do, how you act. What are the planks in your eye that you need to remove? Give these to God and pray for them to be removed.
