Ephesians 1:1-2

From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus. I am an apostle because that is what God wanted. To God's holy people living in Ephesus, believers in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Who are you?

Child, friend, good student, enemy, victim, short, thin, fat, athelete, musician . . . . . . . . .

You might want to stop and think about the ways that people describe you and how you would describe yourself.

In the New Testament Paul describes himself in many ways, and in the letter to the church in Ephesus he uses the title "apostle". Someone who is picked out by God to bring the Good News to people, this is what Paul is all about.

But why is Paul an apostle? Is it because he saw an advert for the job? Is it because he saw the need and responded? No! He was an apostle because that is what God wanted!

So what does God want you to be?

There may be clues in the ways that people describe you, it could be something that you do that excites you, something that you want to do. It will be something that people will recognise in you.

When I was 16 people would say to me that I was an evangelist! I didn't believe them, because it was too good to be true, but this is what I became, because God wanted it for me.

Paul discovered what God wanted and it was not a pretty path, he learnt through persecution, pain and conflict. But he knew what God wanted him to be and that is what gave him the confidence to write this letter to the Church in Ephesus.

Today think and pray about what God wants you to be.

Lord God you know what you want me to be. Help me to discover that in a fresh way today. Amen.
