And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. James 3:6
First Thessalonians 5:20-21 urges you to test the messages you hear from others. Why? The words you speak and those spoken by others can "ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it."
Some messages can't be trusted because even those who share them don't understand them. Some can't be trusted because they're intended to confuse. Some messages can't be trusted because they make enemies of friends.
Words have incredible power. They can hurt or heal, confuse or enlighten, invite trust or instill fear. The only words you can trust completely are the words God placed in the Bible. Be careful about trusting just anything you hear from others. Be careful about the words you speak to others. Ponder what you say before you speak.
Prayer: Dear God, it's easy to say words full of hatred, anger, pain, and deceit. It's easy to find those who speak the same kind of words. Give me wisdom to know what words can be trusted and what words are to be rejected--whether they're words I hear or words I'm about to say.
