Why do we need them? Why do they exist? What does the New Testament say about them?

Calvin, Spurgeon, and many others did not agree with the use of instruments in church. Spurgeon states that instruments were childish things to help the Israelites learn. When we are spiritually mature, we can make melody without instruments.(Commentary on Psalm 33, Psalm 42). The use of musical instruments would be no more suitable than burning of incense and lighting of lamps and other restorations of the shadows of the law, as the Papists borrowed from the Jews (Calvin). "We might as well pray by machinery as praise by it” (Spurgeon Commentary on Psalm 42:4).

Calvin: "Men who are fond of outward pomp may delight in that noise; but the simplicity which God recommends to us by the apostles is far more pleasing to him." (Calvin, Commentary on Psalm 33)

Musical expression of worship with instruments and voices come together in a rich wonderful configuration that sounds like heaven on earth. Perhaps those who love to monopolize worship with the eloguence utterances as they articulate Scripture, and they discern that's all that is imperative and essential in worship. The mind can not absorb any more than the derriere can stand.

Instruments in worship help lead the worshipers to prepare us for the WORD of GOD to touch our hearts.

Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals.
Psalm 150:1-6

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!
Psalm 98:4-6

4,000 gatekeepers, and 4,000 shall offer praises to the Lord with the instruments that I have made for praise.”
1 Chronicles 23:5

Yes it is good to make a joyful noise in praise to the Lord

But I do agree that in some churches the 'outward pomp' of the singer/band on stage strives to get more praise than they are giving the Lord

Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Psalm 29:2
